Island location is a big factor in the game. When attacking another island the distance between the two islands is a key factor, your army must travel from your island to the other in order for the battle to happen, and then should they be victorious, travel home again.
Upon your armies arrival, the battles happen instantly and you and the defender are provided reports on the outcome. The victor and casualties are all contained within the battle report. The outcome of the battle is decided based on the attacker's offensive numbers and the defenders defensive buildings and army.
Alliances can help reinforce a players base with troops, however due to the travel time strategy needs to be considered, for example if there is more than one attack ongoing against an alliance your troops cannot be in two places at once and travel times will be a factor.
Each ship has a different travel speed, and some troops can only fit on specific ships; therefore the travel speed of your army is dependant on what type of troops are being sent on what ship. Your army will always travel at the lowest speed of the ships that is part of that fleet. You can send your troops in separate batches so they arrive at different times, however you need to also consider that while your army has arrived at another island, it is that island's duty to feed the troops there.
Attack Types
